Elizabeth Price Imagine being abducted from your home and family to join the fighting of a brutal, excruciating, and harsh war. This is the life of many children in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Myanmar. The children suffer from being in poverty and the loosing their families while being taken off to war. Child soldiers are considered victims since they are abducted from their families then, drugged, and brainwashed. One significant reason child soldiers are considered victims of war because they are abducted from their homes and taken away from family. Norman Okello was 12 years old when he got abducted while he was sneaking back from the rice fields with his father. In an interview with the Telegraph he explained that when a group of 5 soldiers surrounded them he had to lie to them and tell him that the man he was with was not his father. If he had told the truth that the man was his father then he would have had to kill him. In the article it states “The LRA often forced recruits to murder their parents so that they’d have no family to escape to” This proves that many kids were forced to kill their families so if they were to escape they wouldn’t have anyone to go back to. Norman was able to convince the soldiers of his lie, but he was severely beaten then taken off to become apart of the military. Everyone says that you need to enjoy your childhood while it last but at 12 years old kids at being taken off to the military (Hall). They should be learning to ride a bike not learning to work as a suicide bomber. In addition to why child soldiers are considered victims of war since they are abducted from their homes and taken from family, many children have been taken from their villages and homes while just doing regular type things “Sudan’s army and rebels have kidnapped children to fight in their country's civil war, with 100s been snatched from villages in the last month”(Child Soldiers Summative Essay). This reflects how children are not the perpetrators, but the victims because many of them are removed from their own villages, to fight for their country un-voluntarily. People say that you don’t want to grow up. You need to enjoy your childhood but these children don’t get the chance to if they are taken to be trained as suicide bombers for war. More importantly child soldiers are considered victims of war because they are not morally responsible for the actions they perform because once they are recruited, they become drugged and brainwashed. Nasir, a 12 year old child soldier, told his story about what happened when he was taken to be apart of Isis suicide bomber as a young boy. He told how once he and 59 other children were brought to the commanders, “They were told that Isis commanders cared for them more than their own parents… our parents were unbelievers” (Storr). This reveals that the children were brainwashed by being told false information. The commanders most likely didn’t care for them as much as they let off. They just needed the children for war purposes. In conclusion child soldier are the victims not the perpetrators. They are being brainwashed, drugged, and abducted to do moral acts that wouldn’t be done in a normal life. The children will forever be affected by their experience in the war. Using children as soldiers needs to be addressed. They deserve to be living a childhood at home. Not fighting in a excruciating war. MLK and Malcolm X’s POV’s are similar because they both gave speeches/wanted equal civil rights, because they both felt that in the country of America, people were treated differently because of their race. Both men were different because one wanted a nonviolent protest, and the other would do whatever it takes to gain independence, because in the time period of 1964, the United States was going through a great racial separation. According to “I have a Dream” MLK states “One day this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; That all men are created equal.’” This explains how MLK hopes to have all men be treated equal because they are created equal. MLK also states “Little black boys and black girls will be able to hold hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” This also shows that he wants all races to get along. According to “Adress to a Meeting in New York, 1964” Malcolm X stated that “It is a racial explosion that can ignite the racial powder keg that exist all over earth.” He also states “Now I think that no one would disagree that the dark masses of Africa and Asia and LAtin America are already seething with bitterness, animosity, hostility, unrest, and impatience with racial intolerance that they themselves have experienced at the hands of the white West.” This shows that Malcolm X has noticed that racial equality is becoming more and more of a problem, and he thinks that others can agree that people all over the world of different coloring are just bursting inside with anger, but not expressing it and are becoming more impatient with racial tolerance from the whites. This illustrates how both MLK and Malcolm X wanted racial equalities, and so did all other colored citizens. MLK and Malcolm X both also have differences in their protest . In “I have a Dream”, MLK states “we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.” This explains that through all of the protest, MLK will not let it get to be violent in any physical way. He also stated “Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.” This explains how we can get just as much or even more done by using force from the soul, not physical force, in other words, use your words. Malcolm X’s speech states “There are 22 million African Americans who are ready to fight for their independance right here. When I say fight for independance right here, I don’t mean no nonviolent fight, or turn the other cheek fight. Those days are gone. Those days are over.” This shows that he wants people to fight for their freedom, and not by using words, but by using physical force if necessary. MLK and Malcolm X both had similarities and differences in their protests and speeches by both wanting the same civil rights. MLK believed in protesting nonviolently, while Malcolm X was over with protesting calmly and wanted the independence, for whatever it took to get it, to end this racial segregation. Human Interest Story
“Girls we need to talk to you about something very important,” David Price tells his daughters Elizabeth, 9, and Caroline,8. David’s eyes wander all over the room. He is looking between Lauren, his wife, Elizabeth, and Caroline. David looks at the ground, “We have to move to Texas, but not until the end of the school year.” He looks up, Caroline is crying as well as Lauren, but Elizabeth just looks around. Confused almost. Then she falls to the ground crying. “I’m so sorry,” he tells them. *** The day David got laid off was very unexpected. It was over fall break and Lauren, Elizabeth, and Caroline were in Alabama visiting family when Lauren got a call from David. They spoke for a long time before she told the girls the devastating news. The girls were only 9 and 8 at the time so they didn't fully understand what was happening. The only part they understood was that they might have to move because David had found a job opening in Houston, Texas. *** Lauren and the girls got back from Alabama and girls went to school the next day and had to tell all their friends the news. Elizabeth told her friends in class when they were going around telling something about their fall break. When she told the class everything was in slow motion by the time it was her turn. She didn't know or was capable of say i’m moving to her friends. When she stood up she went up slowly. “I um, I’m moving.” Everyone's faces went blank. Jaws dropped to the floor. Why why why was all she heard from her friends and classmates. *** A school year had gone by for the Price family, and they were planning on moving in the beginning of summer. David left town for Texas on Monday and was coming back on Friday to help pack up the house since the movers were coming on Saturday. The few days David was gone the girls helped Lauren clean the house. On Friday when David returned from Texas he came flying into the house. “Elizabeth and Caroline please come down stairs!” He shouted from the kitchen. Elizabeth and Caroline came down stairs and sat in the same spot that they sat in when they found out they were moving. “I had a meeting with my boss and… we are not moving” “REALLY!?” yelled Caroline and Elizabeth at the same time. Both girls jumped up and gave David the biggest hug. They couldn't believe they were not moving. |
